Motorcycles
I have always enjoyed riding motorcycles. My first experience was riding on the gas tank of my older brother's Indian Warrior. I thought it felt like riding a roller coaster or flying in a small aircraft. When I was 14 my parents bought me a Cushman Eagle motor-scooter. It gave me the freedom I needed to get through my troublesome teens. While in Tuy Hoa, Viet Name, many of my friends talked about getting back to "the world" and getting back on their bikes. So, when I got back to the U.S. I bought a 1969 Honda 350 Scrambler. It was fast enough for me and helped me filter back into the reality of the United States. Marriage and Ministry came and years went by without a motorcycle. Maybe it was my mid life crisis, but the time came when I wanted another motorcycle. I found a 1974 360 Honda Scrambler and started riding again. Arizona was the perfect place to ride because of the weather. I realized that if I was going to see the beauty of this region, I would have to have a larger bike, so I purchased a 2002 Honda 1100VT Spirit. One day while at an air show I met a man with a leather jacket and motorcycle club patch with Christian logo on it. I asked him if he was a Christian and he said he was. I asked him if he rode a motorcycle and he said he did. The thought never occurred to me that you could be and do both. I thought it was the best of both worlds. Later I saw a bike club advertised in a magazine, and called Fred Beall of the Azuza Street Riders. We talked and I joined. Do you have a yearning to ride a bike again? Do you have a bike now? From a degree in Psychology (University of New Mexico in 1973) to a pastorate in Arizona, Bro. Gary Schafer is truly a man with a burden for missions. Visit his website to see photos of the places where he and his wife Shelley have worked to spread the Oneness Apostolic Doctrine and helped establish churches across the globe (too numerous to mention here). Bro. Schafer was one of the first members of Azuza StreetRiders outside the southeastern US and continues to be an ardent supporter of ASR efforts to reach lost bikers and their families. His website has several links to the ASR website, one of which caught the attention of and led to the formation of our newest chapter in the Philippines.
May God richly bless you and your efforts for Him, Bro. Gary and Sis. Shelley Schafer!
